Direct Conservation icon • Insurance: 
The EAZA population of Grevy’s zebra already has the characteristics of an insurance population and this will be maintained. 

• Research
The EAZA population is used for testing/developing (non-invasive) methods for e.g. stress and reproductive related research that can be used in the field or in zoos. It can also provide samples towards evolutionary research of the species or equids in general.

• Capacity building
Conservation training is provided to Kenyans in range through Grevy’s zebra Trust, Marwell Wildlife and Northern Rangelands Trust

• Expertise
Expertise on small population management for in range management is provided when relevant and requested.
   
Indirect Conservation icon • Fundraising
Funds are raised through the programme for conservation action, incl. research and monitoring, of in situ population in Kenya through Marwell Wildlife.
   
Non Conservation icon • Education
Within the EAZA community and visitors there is a lack of awareness about how different zebra species are in their needs, behaviour, and social structure. The programme (together with the TAG) will work on materials to highlight this.

In March 2024, the Grevy's zebra EEP had 215 animals in 53 institutions.

Programme highlights

  • In Zooquaria 110 (Winter 2020) on page 18 there an article outlining the outcomes of the Equid TAG Regional Collection Plan. 
  • The EAZA Annual TAG Report 2021 has been published and on page 50 the activities of the Equid TAG have been highlighted.
  • The International Studbook for Grevy’s zebra 2022 has been published and can be found here.
