Programme roles

Direct Conservation icon  Rescue (locally)
It is currently unknown how many animals still live in the wild in range countries. White winged ducks are susceptible to Avian TB which makes transportation and importing animals difficult. The EEP is in discussion with projects happening in Cambodia and Assam to see what support is needed.

 Insurance
There is much uncertainty of the status of the white winged ducks in the wild and it is expected that the population will decrease further. Potentially the EEP population can function as an insurance population after genetic studies on the EEP population are done.

 Conservation education (in range)
in range countries white winged ducks are often confused with comb ducks (arkidiornis melanotos) due to the rarity of the white winged ducks. Education in range may help in correctly identifying ducks.

 Research on Avian TB
White winged ducks are susceptible for Avian TB which is a highly limiting factor any potential reintroduction and feasible insurance population. Therefore, research into Avian TB is needed.

 Training (in range)
Training in staff on how to do radio tracking and check nest boxes.

Indirect Conservation icon  Research (husbandry)
Further research into best husbandry practices is needed especially around nest boxes and Avian TB.
